Janet Hanham

Janet Hanham has been a fighter since day one. Born at the Grace General Hospital, St. John's, five months premature, and weighing just one pound six ounces, she spent the first six months of her life at the Janeway Children's Hospital. Her weight had climbed to eleven pounds four ounces when she underwent open heart surgery to repair a leaky valve at the age of one year. Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at a young age, Janet's strong will and desire to succeed have enabled her to overcome the odds.

A Special Olympics competitor since 1992, Janet has competed on Provincial, National and International levels. Her athletic abilities have earned a total of 55 medals in Track & Field and Cross-Country-Skiing. Participation in these events has also enabled her to travel to many places across Newfoundland & Labrador and other parts of Canada. She is a member of the local chapter of St. John Ambulance and has also been a Cub Scout Leader in the community.

Janet is described as an outgoing individual who tries to enjoy life to its fullest potential. She has a tremendous love for children, enjoys meeting new people and spending time on the Internet while still finding time to read, listen to music and attend community dances. She has been a client of Bridges Employment Corporation since 1998 and employed as an Office Assistant with Bridges since December 2000. In the past she has also been seasonally employed at Horsebrook Trailer Park. She graduated high school in June of 2000 and continues to strive towards her ultimate goal for the future.

She sets a primary example that if you work hard, have faith in yourself, and put your mind to it, you can achieve. … Bridges Employment Corporation, 22 March 2002
