Public Notices...

REPORTING EMERGENCIES:

When reporting an emergency via 911:

When the emergency 911 telephone service is fully implemented, a public notice will be issued indicating full activation of 911 throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The following advice is provided in advance:

* When calling 911, your call will be routed to a 911 call taking centre based on your location.

* A live call taker will ask "Do you need police, fire or ambulance?" and "What community are you calling from?"

* Remain calm and be prepared to give your information to the emergency responder once your call is transferred.

* Stay on the line and follow instructions.

* Listen carefully and speak clearly.

* Know your locations (community or area you are in such as building, home address, landmarks, GPS coordinates, road exits/markers, etc.).

Individuals in areas with 911 service are asked to refrain from testing the service (i.e. calling and hanging up). Under the Emergency 911 Act, false, frivolous or vexatious calls to 911 are an offense with possible penalties of up to $1,000 and/or imprisonment upon conviction.

When reporting an emergency via (709)279-1333:
Our firefighters are dispatched through a paging system. Once you call our 7 digit emergency number, you will either talk directly to one of our firefighters or hear a recording. Don't hang up when you hear the recording, our pagers have already sounded & 30 firefighters are waiting for you to speak after the beep. Ensure you provide us the following information when you call:
                                    1) Your Name
                                    2) Your Address or Location
                                    3) Type of Emergency

Remember to remain calm & talk clearly when reporting an emergency.

If you dial our emergency number by mistake, please wait until after the beep & state you have called the wrong number.

Having the civic number posted & providing us with all information will assist with an efficient response.
Our firefighters are on call 24/7/365 & are ready to respond to all emergencies.

Please ensure homes or businesses have the civic number posted & in a location which is visible from the road. Posted civic addresses assist first responders with quickly locating the location of an emergency.

Forest Fire Season Declared for Newfoundland and Labrador

Residents preparing to burn brush as part of clean-up activities around their properties should note that the 2015 forest fire season will start on May 1 for the island portion of the province and end on October 15. In Labrador, the season will start on May 15 and end on September 30. For the island, this year’s season has been extended by two weeks in the fall due to above average temperatures and increased forest fire activity in recent years.

“A large portion of the province’s forest fires are started by people and most are preventable. Reducing the number of human-caused fires is an integral component of our fire prevention program. The start of the forest fire season provides us with an opportunity to remind and educate the public on the dangers associated with forest fires and the need to be cautious when starting outdoor fires.”

- The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency

During spring, fine fuels such as dead vegetation in fields and other open areas appear wet but can dry and burn in a matter of hours when conditions change. These materials play a role in most fires responded to early in the forest fire season because they ignite easily and can spread fire quickly.

A permit to burn is required under the Forestry Act and can be obtained at no cost at regional or district forest management offices throughout the province. The lighting of fires for cooking and camping does not require a permit, but certain forest fire regulations must be followed.

Information on the forest fire season and regulations are available at: www.nr.gov.nl.ca/nr/forestry/fires/index.html

A toll-free number is available to report forest fires during forest fire season.

The number is 1-866-709-FIRE (3473).
